The Importance of Childcare Sustainability
How Brisbane City Childcare is implementing Childcare Sustainability
At Brisbane City Childcare, we understand that practising sustainable choices now has a very real impact on our shared future. Childcare sustainability is crucially important, because teaching children sustainable choices while they are young sets them up for a lifetime of sustainable living. Read on as we share how we have been actively incorporating sustainable practice in childcare for many years, and how you can incorporate these practices into your own home.
Brisbane City Childcare encourages and demonstrates to children the importance of sustainability, by practising sustainable choices such as:
- Having a sustainable veggie garden
- Limiting our use of plastic
- Growing & using some of our own fresh produce
- Providing marine education programs
- Having a chicken farm
- Teaching children how to be sustainable in their day-to-day life
- Practicing recycling at the centre, and educating children on the importance of it
How to Bring these Sustainable Practices in Childcare into your Home
The best way to bring this sustainable practice in childcare into your home, is to talk to your child about what they have been learning and encouraging them to use the skills they have learnt. Ask your children to show you what they have been doing at opportune times.
Some of the ways you might look to incorporate some of these sustainable practices into your home include:
- Recycling: Engaging them when taking out the rubbish, asking them what they have been recycling and following the same protocols, ensuring you have two separate bins, and separate waste into what can be recycled and what can’t and encouraging them to help sort. You might even talk about ways you can reuse some of the items in household immediately, such as using empty milk bottles for arts and craft, and glass jars for pens.
- Composting: if you are able, you can look to compost fruit and veggie peels and food waste for use in your own garden.
- Limiting plastic in the household: you might also look at limiting the use of household plastic such as not purchasing pre-packaged fruit and veg, making sure to take shopping bags, purchasing reusable / cloth wrapping paper and purchasing household cleaning or beauty products that can be refilled.
- Using eco-friendly products: Opt for eco-friendly products that are non-toxic or natural to reduce the impact on the environment and marine life.
- Reducing energy consumption: Ask children to turn off lights and electronics when they are not in use, initiating a conversation around saving energy.
- Growing your own produce: If you have the space, time and patience, you may also like to start your own herb or veggie garden that the children can water and maintain themselves.
Children learn through experience and repeated actions, so seeing you practice sustainability in the house will help them foster these skills in themselves.
